I have always hoped that Pat and I would be able to gather at O Happy Day with our children and watch as they played with their cousins just like he used to. I am thankful for the memories we have made visiting with brothers, sisters, cousins and friends and at least we were able to share it with our first born. Dogs are not usually allowed but seeing as the house is changing hands we figured so could the rules. No one appreciates the beach like Maggie does. Pat woke up early every morning to let her run and she closed out her days the same way.
The following is a letter left for renters by the Stier sisters:
The Ins and Outs of O Happy Day
O happy Day began in 1962 when our Dad bought a parcel of land on the ocean located at 3806 Palm Boulevard, Isle of Palms, SC for $5000.00. After plans were drawn and construction complete at the cost of $25,000 our family arrived for our first visit on Easter of 1965. Mom, Dad, 7 of us children as well as our help, Esther, were thrilled. When school recessed in June, we moved down for the summer. It was then we saw our first sea turtle laying her eggs as we strolled the shore one night and to this day turtles return to that same spot time and time again.
O Happy Day, the name my dad called this place is a plain ol' basic beach house. Nothing fancy. A place for families to gather to enjoy the surf and sand, to celebrate birthdays, weddings, reunions, etc. Where families bring their in-laws and the in-laws being the out-laws to have a "good ol' time."
We've enjoyed her for 50 years and thanks to people like you she's still ours... When the house was built we did not have heat and a/c but after Hurricane Hugo in 1990 we upgraded to the finer things in life...
This house has been an asset in our lives but it has not been without its hardships. After our Dad died and several destructive hurricanes we would be in limbo but our Mom had the determination to keep O Happy Day so that her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would know the Carolina shore. To see the shimmering moon on the ocean and to witness the turtles crawling to sea. So needless to say, this ol' house has been enjoyed by four generation in our family as well as the generations of our guests.
